Contracts for Difference (CfD)

CfDs are a significant instrument for supporting the development of renewable energy projects, by establishing a financial agreement between energy producers and the CfD Counterparty, a governmental entity or one designated by the government. In Romania the CfD Counterparty is OPCOM. These contracts provide producers with a predetermined strike price, determined through competitive auctions, offering financial stability and security for the energy produced.

The strike price is set through a competitive bidding method, creating a transparent and fair market. If the market price is below this threshold, the producer receives the difference from the CfD Counterparty, making renewable energy investment more attractive. If the market price is higher, the producer repays the difference, maintaining financial balance.
